Bird Island

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, San Francisco, CA 94123

Google Maps Location: http://goo.gl/NLivWt

If you have never ventured off the beaten path from the regular drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and into its recreation area, north of the bridge, I highly recommend you do. This is a tiny island called Bird Island, the one rock structure furthest to the left jutting out into the ocean, overlooking the Marin Headlands. I think it got its name due to all the birds that rest there from time to time, but I'm not for certain. You can see that rock is covered all white in lovely bird poo, as if painters spilled a bunch of white paint everywhere. And it just so happened as I snapped away, I caught a pelican mid-flight in the air, as if posing for the pic. The ocean water was so vibrantly aqua green and blue, and the plant and flower life clinging to the sea-side rocky cliffs added a sense of warmth back to otherwise barren rock. And the weather could not have been any better for me, for most days on the coast are socked in with clouds or fog or rain or all of the above. The weather-photography gods were looking out for me :)
