Rewind about 3 hours in time from my prior post yesterday of the starry night sky and this here was the magnificent sunset, taken from the same spot. There’s a story behind both shots, and how without a mistake on our part, these shots would have never happened. Torres del Paine National Park has no gas stations, let alone anything other than a few hotels. You are 2 plus hours from the closest town. As we drove back from Punta Arenas, we forgot to top our car off with gas in Puerto Natales and drove straight into the park. On the second to last day, as our fuel gage ran near E, we realized “Hmmmm, I wonder if we’ll have enough gas to get out of the park?” We did the rough calculations on how far we thought we drove over the last three days and figured out the gas mileage on our little 1.2 liter VW Up (non-diesel version 😉). We just had enough if we didn’t drive too far into the park our last day. We still got to see Lago and Glacier Grey, but stuck around near our hotel for the evening. I am big believer in the idea that things happen for a reason. If we had topped off our gas properly, we would have been in the park, near the mountain range, no doubt getting nice shots, but nothing like this. A mistake turned into one of the most magnificent sunsets I have ever witnessed, and thoroughly enjoyed spending it with my good friend.
