Mirador los Torres

Torres del Paine, Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region, Chile

We made it! The last 1,000ft or so trudge up a semi-unstable collection of lose rocky trail, sitting on top of or around slippery packed snow, with patches of ice, made for one last exhausting push up to this prize our eyes would feast upon. The Mirador las Torres hike isn’t necessarily a technically challenging hike (only 11.2 miles roundtrip) as it is one of many elevation changes up and down (around 36,000 steps on our pedometer that day), eventually building to about 3,000ft of elevation change, over many small ups and downs. My right achilles, which started to hurt after some two serious weeks of hiking trails like these, was flaring up the whole time. My buddy made it to the top first with me close behind, so to celebrate, he struck a pose on that rock, as an explorer to first reach a summit would. Seeing the three cuernos of the Torres so up and close like that made all the effort and wear and tear on my body worth it. Just priceless!
